about

This is about going back to my family's home town of Bright, in north east Victoria, and dealing with the presence of my long since passed grandfather, Paddy Breen. I see him and hear his voice in the sound of the trees and river behind where he lived, and I feel the heaviness in his heart that I felt all through my childhood. Like many people I see my grandfather in myself as each year passes, my passage through the world like a sonic echo of this brave but haunted man, who fought in a war, dug into his mattress during his post war nightmares that plagued his later life. As a boy and as a young man I used to watch him go off to Bright cemetery to tend to the plot of his second youngest, John, who died in 1971 in the way they used call 'tragically', as a young school teacher in nearby Milawa. He lies there with him now.

lyrics

Took a walk along the Ovens today
Took a step into his memory to join him
Skimming stones into the water so cold
Looked to the old house with maples turned to gold

I’m never very good with the ordinary.
Small towns locked in winter
Makes a young boy splinter

Drive through the mountains to the centre of town
Past the houses of the ones who bore our names
His endless acre of grass and pines
All subdivided and gone and I cant find

Peace with the ordinary
Time now my adversary
Head stones cut for winter
Breaks an old mans heart
And I can't find him, he's gone
Just a main street full of stores and wheel chains and one
Headstone for a young man
Coming home from Milawa

There’s a plot up on the hill
He always knew where he was going
To be with his boy at last
He always knew where he was going.
(in memory of Paddy Breen and John Breen).
